Planet earth is at a tipping point. The next decade is critical if humanity is to avert a climate catastrophe. It’s clear that we must halve emissions by 2030 and drive them to zero by 2050 at the latest.
Achieving this will require an unprecedented response from all of us. It’s time for collaboration on a scale we’ve never seen before.
We're delighted to announce Leaders’ Quest’s role in Countdown: a global collaboration with TED to turn the tide on climate. For this, we have joined forces with our Future Stewards partners, Global Optimism and We Mean Business.
Building the campaign
Over the next year, we’ll convene with climate experts, visionary business leaders and thousands of local organisers, to debate and create a plan of action around five key areas:
- Power – how rapidly can we move to 100% clean energy?
- Built environment – how can we reengineer the stuff around us?
- Transport – how do we transform the ways we move?
- Food – how can we spark a worldwide shift to healthier food systems?
- Nature – how extensively can we regreen the earth?
Countdown invites everyone to play a part in counting the world’s emissions down to zero. The intent is not to be something brand new, but to amplify and cross-fertilise the extraordinary work that is already being done by so many.
Powerful solutions have already been proposed by more than 50 authorities on climate issues. We’ll be gathering many more ideas in the coming months, and our website Countdown.ted.com also provides information and opportunities for people around the world to join the effort.
A summit of 1,000 leaders and influencers – representing a cross-section of nations, businesses, cities and citizens – will be held in Bergen, Norway from October 6-9, 2020.
This central event will be immediately followed by a major global gathering on 10.10.2020, made up of hundreds of connected local events in cities, neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces around the globe – coordinated by the global TEDx community and massively amplified by YouTube and other partners. The goal will be to announce major initiatives in response to the five key questions.
Your participation will be vital in making this a success.
