Welcome to a new episode of Leaders Link: a series of live-streamed conversations with leaders who have special reflections to share on some of the greatest challenges of our time.
Episode 9 features Ashok Vaswani, Global Head of Consumer Banking and Payments, Barclays and advocate of the bank’s shared value agenda.
Ashok joined Barclays in 2010. In this episode of Leaders Link, he compares his experience of the 2008 financial crisis to today’s pandemic. Lockdown saw Barclays move quickly to get 70,000 employees working from home, and continue to support customers and clients globally including through emergency measures launched by the government.
In light of its pivotal role, Ashok talks about the bank’s approach to shared value and belief that every company must fulfil a societal purpose. He explains the importance of Barclays’ focus on supporting customers with digital adoption from 2011, and the mindset shift it entailed, spearheaded by the launch of the Barclays Digital Eagles.
He also discusses the leadership qualities needed today – with empathy and creativity top of the list – and the importance of recognising that we don’t have all the answers. Yet despite the mood of global uncertainty, Ashok remains optimistic. He’s confident that the world will emerge – even stronger – in the months and years ahead.
