Leaders Link Episode 19

A conversation with Lindsay Levin and Ali Abu Awwad

Leaders Link

18 November 2020

Welcome to a new episode of Leaders Link: a series of live-streamed conversations with leaders who have special reflections to share on some of the greatest challenges of our time.

Ali is a Palestinian peace advocate and founder of the Taghyeer (Change) Palestinian Nonviolence Movement.

Ali opens by talking about Taghyeer, his on-the-ground peace movement. He’s full of pride for this community of leaders – many of them women – who are busy serving Palestinians (even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic) and acting as messengers for change.

He says he's keen for Taghyeer to introduce the Palestinian cause to Israeli society, and reminds us that societies have to transform themselves, rather than try to change each other. “Be pro-solution”, he tells us.

Ali describes Taghyeer as a partner to the Palestinians, not a saviour, and is adamant that his people need to trust themselves – especially since Palestinian politicians have created a leadership vacuum.

He touches on US involvement in the Middle East and on the current state of ‘normalisation’. Ali finishes by telling us that his dream is to have "100,000 Palestinians on the street, demanding a peaceful solution..."

Note:  we experienced some sound issues during the first few minutes of this talk, but these were quickly ironed out, so please keep listening!

Thank you for joining us on these Leaders Link talks during 2020. We hope through these sessions we brought a piece of LQ to you.
