‘I thought, I need to break this cycle’ - empowering young people in India through football

Host stories

27 June 2018

We caught up with long-term friend, Ashok Shankar Rathod from the OSCAR foundation, about how he and his team are empowering underprivileged young people in India through football.

OSCAR runs a unique programme that not only teaches the sport to young people, but also helps them succeed in education and life. To date, it has trained over 220 youth leaders from seven Indian states - who have reached nearly 4,000 children.

Ashok has supported Leaders' Quest programmes many times, sharing his story with leaders from around the world as one of our visit hosts.

Last year, thanks to the support of one of those leaders, he took 14 children from a Mumbai slum to play against schools in England - and they won five out of their seven matches!

Here Ashok shares what inspired him to start the Foundation, the power of sport to boost confidence, and how he is taking the organisation to the next level.
