LQ host organisation, Henry Schein Inc is the world's largest provider of healthcare products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners. It's long advocated for business to focus on profit and purpose.
In March 2020, Henry Schein CEO, Stanley Bergman, announced the launch of a COVID-19 rapid test that detects the virus in just 15 minutes.
The rapid test, developed by South Korea-based SD Biosensor, is known as Standard Q COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid Test. It’s intended to be administered by pinprick by a healthcare professional. No instrumentation is needed. Designed to detect antibodies associated with COVID-19, it’s aimed at diagnosing mid- to later stages of the virus, and helping to assess the likelihood of past and present infection.
According to Henry Schein, using the test results (plus the patient’s medical history and other “relevant testing”), the healthcare professional can then determine the best course of treatment.
The company expects to have hundreds of thousands of tests available immediately, with more in April.
"We’re responding to the urgent need for wide availability of rapid point-of-care testing for COVID-19. This pandemic is an unprecedented situation, and making rapid diagnostic tools available to health care professionals is critical for detecting and mitigating the spread of the coronavirus", says Stanley.
Currently the test will be made available under the US Food and Drug Administration’s emergency guidelines.
